Project 183 – Corn Mill Flat Conversion

The project brief was to convert an unused mezzanine floor within the engine room at Bamford Mill to an open market residential flat. With a fascinating history the mill originally dates from 1782 but was destroyed in a fire in 1791. The mill was later rebuilt and converted into a cotton spinning mill powered by the River Derwent. In the nineteenth century a beam engine was installed which was replaced in 1907 by a horizontal steam engine (Edna) which remains in place today.

Working together with the client, who was also the contractor, we were able to sensitively design accommodation around the existing engine gear and pulley workings, resulting in a harmonious conversion in the space above the steam engine that preserved the heritage of the building whilst providing a contemporary industrial residential apartment.
