multi-purpose hostel building

This project involves a new-build timber framed ancillary building within the grounds of Bretton Hostel, funded externally. The new building is built on the site of a former mobile home against the gable ruin of a gritstone wall, clad with untreated larch and topped with a green roof.

A wild meadow roof sails over the gritstone wall ruin, creating the impression of a balancing plane. When viewed from the higher level of the main hostel building, this blends in with the surrounding grassy land. The untreated larch cladding softens the appearance of the building, with the long term view that this will weather down to a silvery grey that fits in with its context.

The building is intended for multi-purpose use in conjunction with the main hostel building, for indoor activities like yoga. Large glazed openings frame distant views over Hope Valley to the north, a serene backdrop for its future users.

Service spaces situated on the other side of the gritstone wall ruin include a bike / garden store and a composting toilet.
