Bakewell Station

The brief for this project was to convert the former Grade II Listed Bakewell railway station from its current use as office space into a café/restaurant. Located along the Monsal Trail, the café is intended to serve both the local community and visitors to the area.

The proposed scheme has been developed to breathe new life into the building while enhancing the surrounding environment and strengthening the existing offer along the Monsal Trail.

The proposals include a large dining space, commercial kitchen, and serving area located within the former ticket hall at ground floor level. At first floor level, a small mezzanine is proposed above the server and ticket office, alongside additional back-of-house and WC facilities. The design replaces the existing full mezzanine floor with a smaller, bridge-like structure, allowing visitors to appreciate the original scale and volume of the ticket hall—something that is currently lost due to the building’s conversion into a two-storey office.

Externally, careful repair and restoration of the façades are proposed, alongside the introduction of new al fresco dining areas at both the front and rear of the building.
